Purchasing the Primary Readings.  The CFA Exam is based on the Primary Readings.  While it is not mandatory that you buy them, in a competitive exam that is graded on a curve, you may be placing yourself at a disadvantage if you do not purchase them.  As previously indicated, they can be purchased from the CFA Institute's sales agent, and most are also available from other sources.  Some candidates will defer some or all of the purchases until they have attended our classes, reviewed the notes that we provide, and then determine which books are necessary.  This is a very personal decision.
